KRIS HAAS
IN THE ARTIST'S WORDS
When you are buying a piece of art from me, whether it is a painting, drawing or collage, you are buying a piece of my life. A piece of my history, her story. A piece of my emotions, my feelings, my experiences of what I go through. As a survivor of a Traumatic Brain Injury (I have had four concussions) my life did an abrupt halt and so I had to listen. Listen to the changes and move with them instead of always fighting against them. Here you see my joy, my pain, my liveliness, my sorrow, my beauty, my determination, my will power, my darkness and yes my lightness. It is an honest life. A life well lived and despite loosing my life I had, my house, my home, my job and even being homeless for a while, I wouldn’t take it back for anything in the world because it has brought me here, to you. The you who is reading this and I welcome you into my world of creativity.
Disjointed Reality Series
My journey as an artist is an exploration deeply rooted in the concepts of fragmentation and cohesion, seeking to untangle the intricate layers of my past and present. The "Disjointed Series" is a heartfelt manifestation of this process, where I strive to find balance among the fragmented aspects of my life, particularly the dichotomy of who I was before and after my accident, which resulted in a Brain Injury Disability.
In my work, the color black serves as a point of initiation, while texture forms the foundation of my exploration. By embedding texture onto the canvas, I allow it to guide the application of sheer paint layers, giving life to subjects through an interplay of movement and expression. My approach celebrates the honesty of exploration—an invitation to rediscover myself through the art I create.
The inspiration behind my process is steeped in the dialogue between past and present. Each painting acts as a vessel for pieces of my history, where sections of previous works are reincarnated through collage onto new canvases. This technique not only repurposes the incomplete but also strives to establish a peaceful cohesion from the chaos of my past, illuminating a path towards clarity in the present.
What draws me to particular scenes is a profound need to reconstruct the puzzle of my life. This journey unfolds as a beautiful, often chaotic dance, rich with texture and layered abstraction. The method I employ allows me to explore the complexity of time and memory, transforming each element into part of a larger, interconnected tapestry.
My art speaks not only to my own experiences but resonates with others who find themselves drawn to its chaotic beauty. It invites viewers to engage with the work, allowing it to echo through their own memories and emotions. Ultimately, my creations aim to bridge the disjointed moments of my life, offering a lens through which we might all find a sense of cohesive understanding.

ABOUT KRIS
Kris Haas, born in 1961 in the culturally vibrant city of Portland, Oregon, has always harbored an intrinsic connection to the world of art. Growing up amidst the scenic west hills of Portland, Haas experienced a childhood marked by adventure and creativity. This imaginative environment laid the groundwork for what would become a lifelong passion for artistic expression, a passion recognized as early as age five.
Art runs in the family for Haas, with her mother being a significant influence. Despite this artistic lineage, her formal education in art was minimal, with only a few painting classes to her name. Instead, Haas chose the path of self-discovery and experimentation, developing her distinctive style through countless hours dedicated to her studio.
Life after high school saw Haas diving into the workforce; however, a pivotal moment came post-divorce when she returned to drawing and, subsequently, to her true calling as an artist. For Haas, art is more than a profession—it is a personal journey of self-discovery, providing a canvas for abstract expression that she uniquely understands and interprets.
Haas's creative process is intuitive, a fluid sequence of moments that build upon one another. Her technique, honed through time, experimentation, and persistence, reflects the depth of her life experiences, making her work singularly unique. This is best exemplified in some of her most rewarding projects, such as the two 6' x 6' paintings created for a prominent DC building lobby, located mere blocks from the White House.
Influenced profoundly by the likes of Jackson Pollock, Haas pursues her artistry independently, unaffiliated with any clubs or societies, yet her work resonates far and wide. Haas’s art has graced the settings of major TV shows and holds pride of place in collections belonging to a distinguished CPA firm in Portland and a law firm in Beverly Hills.
Countless admirers have spoken of the profound impact of Haas's creations, though she humbly states that their words are too numerous to recount. In addition to art, Haas has a passion for fitness, maintaining a rigorous gym routine five days a week, and enjoys the captivating narratives found in films.
Today, Haas dedicates herself full-time to her craft, driven by a desire to continually produce work that inspires. She envisions art not just as a personal endeavor but as a guiding light for humanity, showcasing the wondrous capabilities of human creativity and strength. For Haas, art represents a profound role in society, exemplifying character, passion, and the limitless potential for creation.
