Poem by dan stone
How rich am I?
Don’t bother checking
my accounts.
My stocks and bonds.
assuming I have some
which I don’t.
Don’t ask my car,
my closet or my safe,
assuming I had one
which I don’t.
But you can ask my face.
Look close. No reason
to feel shy much less
apologize, which I won’t.
Explore the lines
the crinkling eyes
the shadows
and the spots.
You’ll see the signs.
The laughs, the tears,
the imprint of years
of time, of sorrows,
joys, losses, gains
triumphs, pain.
Are you starting to see
the light through
all these cracks?
Are you telling
The fictions from the facts?
if you really care
to know to see
to comprehend my wealth
look in the vase.
You might say
I’m just someone
with a green thumb
or a leprechaun
on the tail end
of his rainbow
relishing my
hard earned treasure,
my canvas and my brush,
my own pot of gold.
How rich am I?
Don’t bother checking
my accounts.
My stocks and bonds.
assuming I have some
which I don’t.
Don’t ask my car,
my closet or my safe,
assuming I had one
