CAMMY DAVIS
IN THE ARTIST'S WORDS
I’ve always loved art, I used to sketch flowers on my papers in elementary school and I took every art class I could in high school. I was a high achiever but also shy and reserved. When I was 16 I got pregnant. I withdrew into myself and became depressed. It was the first time I wanted to paint my emotions on canvas to express what I couldn’t say out loud. I envisioned painting myself in a womb. In my mind, it was on a large-scale canvas. I thought about it often during my nine months of pregnancy.
I continued painting in college and eventually got married. Painting went on the backburner while I raised my family. When my marriage ended, I slipped into another depression that went on for years. I picked up a brush again and painting was a way to cope with dark feelings. I was sent to a psychiatrist and diagnosed with severe chronic depression and eventually with bipolar 2. I started taking medication, seeing a counselor and continued painting.
Painting has become an important part of my life. Through counseling, medication and art, I’m learning how to navigate difficult situations, accept my emotions and not let them control my life. I’ve tried different styles of art, from surreal to symbolic but I found my passion in abstract expressionism. I’ve finally discovered how to paint my emotions on canvas!

ABOUT CAMMY
Cammy Davis is an Abstract Expressionist artist whose work has been featured at fine art galleries between Seattle and Palm Springs, and has been published in books—Ashland, Oregon and Ashland, Oregon Day Trips—and periodicals—EATT Magazine, Luxe Beat Magazine and Southern Oregon Magazine. She has developed art tutorial videos and music art videos. Cammy is also an active member of the arts community of Southern Oregon and is a founding member of the Arts Alliance of Southern Oregon. Cammy studied Fine Art at the University of Idaho, raised a family and then went back to complete her degree in Interior Design at Bellevue College in Washington.
Cammy’s work is influenced by her roots in the outdoors, growing up in a trailer near a river surrounded by the woods. As a child, Cammy spent her time making sword fern teepees, and treehouses from material of the land. The lifestyle was simple and creative: if Cammy wanted something, she found a way to make it. This translated to her art in later years, both in her contrasting use of natural and industrial materials, and her characteristic independence. Cammy constructs her work from scratch. She combines the hands of an artist who builds her own panels, and mixes her own paint, with the mind of one who conducts her own research, attempts her own experiments, and takes her own risks.
