L MCDONALD
IN THE ARTIST'S WORDS
Making art has been at the heart and soul of my life for more than four decades. Whatever the medium or style, my subject is always how humans, with all their complications, contradictions, fragility and strength, fit into the world. Painting helps me make sense of life and calms down my ever present tendency to sink into depression and anxiety. I don’t expect resolutions. Painting is not supposed to be an answer, it’s supposed to be a question.
I try to capture a frozen moment in time whose meaning is fluid and frequently changes over time. Relationships are at the center of each painting whether it is with others or with oneself. My hope is to provide an image for others to relate to, based on their own history and beliefs. My most rewarding moments as an artist are when people tell me how they are moved or connected to an image.
My paintings evolve as they see fit. Figures emerge and disappear as they choose. When we are in agreement, the painting is finished.
Art has saved my life over and over again. I know that art will take me wherever it wants me to go and that it will be a place that nurtures and inspires me –where the problems to solve are creative ones. Solving those problems feeds the soul.

ABOUT L
As an only child, L became an observer early in life. But it wasn’t until early adulthood that she began trying to express her observations. Largely self-taught, her expressionistic figures became the avenue to clarifying her reactions to people and events in her life. L has exhibited in numerous galleries and juried shows in California, Texas and Oregon and has had four solo shows in the past four years. Her work is in both public and private collections.
